Chaplain Jim Cosgrove

Upon ordination in 1983, Jim worked in parishes in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast. Concurrent to this ministry he joined and served as a chaplain in the Army Reserve.

In 1998 Jim decided to serve full time in the Army as a ‘Padre’. He has served in Darwin, Townsville, Canberra, Brisbane and Sydney. He has deployed overseas to Bougainville, East Timor, New Guinea and Afghanistan.

Jim has extensive experience in conducting Commemoration services and giving pastoral support to families of Australian servicemen who have been killed whilst in training or on operations overseas. As an extension to this pastoral care he has provided valuable support to the families of soldiers who had been reported missing in action in WW2 and have more recently been located. These ceremonies give families a sense of closure by being able to lay their loved ones to rest in a grave that bears their name. It has been a real honour in helping to provide the ceremonies which touch people’s hearts and give them peace and hope. He also organised two Community services in Thursday Island and Nhulunbuy when they were visited by Prime Minister Abbott.

Jim has written and recorded many songs over 40 years, including school songs, wedding songs, bible stories and songs with religious themes for school children. In 1990 he wrote the song “Soldiers of Australia” sung to Waltzing Matilda and used as an unofficial Army hymn for the last 25 years. Jim also writes poetry and has received accolades for his bush poetry and has won several competitions. Jim has written a song for the members of the Australian Bravery Association. It recounts various experiences, feelings and thoughts of members who have received bravery awards and suffered because of them. The song helps to give support and celebrate the great friendships that are the cornerstone of this association. Jim is happy to take commissions for school songs and songs for different occasions.

Jim was a Board member and Chair the St Georges Holiday House at Rainbow Bay on the Gold Coast for 14 years. This charitable facility has functioned for over 100 years and its aim has been to support veterans after the World Wars through to affording low cost holiday accommodation for Service personnel and their families on the Gold Coast. It also provides emergency accommodation for veterans.

Jim was married to Jeanette for almost twenty years but lost her as a result of a small operation on her lung which went horribly wrong. Jim enjoys his step-family of four married children and ten grand-children with an eleventh grand-child already singing songs with his Nanna up in heaven.

Jim has worked for many years in the Area of Domestic and family violence (DFV). He is a Board member for the Red Rose Foundation and has compiled a collection of songs about FDV which help in raising public awareness, in assisting training about different aspects of this violence, and which can be sung in rallies about FDV. He co-ordinates an annual candle lighting FDV Memorial which remembers and prays for Women who have been murdered in FDV in recent years.

Jim is currently providing voluntary religious ministry in the outback Western Queensland parishes of Charleville and Cunnamulla and their associated churches. He also helps out in his home parish of Waterloo Bay including Thorneside, Birkdale and Wellington point in the Brisbane Bayside. Jim has also been a Justice of the Peace, helping the community for over 40 years.
